I came across this article on Consumer Reports about the top cereals marketed to kids. Of the top 27 kid cereals, 23 of them contained more than 50% sugar! That just boggles my mind. Nutrition is about having good food to power your body, not by powering your body by chemicals that will hype you up to crash later. The four cereals that were rated as nutritious were Cheerios, Kix, Honey Nut Cheerios (all General Mills), and Life (Quaker Oats), with Cheerios topping the list.
The amount of sugar in a serving of some of the 23 cereals equals the amount of sugar you will get from a glazed donut. Keep in mind, these cereals are being marked to our kids. And the truth is, we continue to eat these cereals as adults.
If you wonder why you may have a few extra pounds, and you eat one of the 23 cereals mentioned, you can stop thinking. It really bothers me to know that $229 million dollars is spent in promoting these products to children, and with our busy lives, we just accept it as an acceptable meal for children and ourselves.
